Stomiiformes: A Stress-Releasing Desktop Toy Inspired by Nature

Bringing the Beauty of Biomimicry to Your Workspace

Inspired by the intricate structures found in marine life, designer Cheng-Wei Kao has created Stomiiformes, a stress-releasing desktop toy that combines physical play with mental creativity. This unique piece draws inspiration from the seahorse tail and other aquatic creatures, showcasing the beauty of nature's form in a functional and entertaining way.

Stomiiformes stands out from other desktop toys with its open-ended design and stress-relieving properties. By combining different module sections, users can experience a range of tactile sensations and tap into their creative thinking. The toy allows for both fidgeting and conscious play, providing a versatile and engaging experience.

The realization of Stomiiformes involves traditional mold production with metal die casting, using materials such as stainless steel or aluminum. The design specifications vary depending on the model, with a single module measuring 50mm in width, 34mm in depth, and 28mm in height. The 13-piece module model extends to 210mm in width, while the 17-piece module model reaches 270mm in width.

Stomiiformes is operated purely by hand, offering a hands-on and immersive experience. The toy comes in three different models: 12 pieces, 16 pieces, and 30 pieces. Each model shares the same design structure but provides a unique play experience. The 16 and 30-piece models offer a more playful and creative feel, allowing users to explore open-ended ideas and unleash their imagination.

Throughout the development of Stomiiformes, Cheng-Wei Kao conducted extensive research and troubleshooting. This included analyzing existing executive toys, market research, sketch models, rapid prototyping, and manufacturing studies. The goal was to strike a balance between the natural beauty of biomimicry and a mechanical aesthetic. The final design achieves this balance by combining simple, metallic, and technical forms into a vivid and vital vision.

Stomiiformes was created as a graduation thesis project at Parsons School of Design, with the initial development starting in September 2016 and concluding in May 2017. The project posed various challenges, including defining the criteria and ideal design principles for an executive toy. Additionally, finding the right balance between natural beauty and a mechanical feel required careful consideration and experimentation.

Stomiiformes has garnered recognition for its innovative design, winning the Iron A' Design Award in the Toys, Games, and Hobby Products category in 2019. This prestigious award acknowledges well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. Stomiiformes stands as a testament to the integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics, providing fulfillment and positive experiences for users.

Experience the captivating beauty of Stomiiformes on your desk and let this stress-releasing toy inspire your creativity and imagination.
